The left-arm pacer battles a rare disease in New Delhi as support pours in from the cricket community.
Former Afghanistan cricketer Shapoor Zadran is in a critical fight for his life in a New Delhi ICU, diagnosed with haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). This rare and severe condition wreaks havoc on the immune system, causing extreme inflammation and potentially damaging vital organs. At just 38, Zadran's towering presence on the field is now replaced by the harsh reality of hospital life.
Zadran, who played 80 international matches for Afghanistan, has been unwell since October last year. After initial treatment in Afghanistan, he was rushed to India in January for advanced care, aided by the cricket community, including Rashid Khan and the Afghanistan Cricket Board chairman. Despite a brief recovery, his health took a turn, leading to multiple hospital admissions and severe complications, including tuberculosis and dengue.
Now facing the advanced Stage Four of HLH, Shapoor’s condition is dire. With significant weight loss and limited communication, he’s fighting an uphill battle. Former teammates and the cricket fraternity rally around him, showing that even in the toughest times, the spirit of cricket shines bright.
